Getting in Powder Shape

We’re in the middle of summer! For some of you the summer might not be the best season of the year! After all, not much powder and usually the waves are not the best of the year either. Still, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything related to bombing down a deep hill somewhere, ‘cause you can make sure you’re ready when the snow comes back by getting into shape for the upcoming season. And the beginning of summer is actually a good starting point to do so.
So before you start buying new running shoes or joining some outdoor bootcamp group immediately, how can you best prepare for the next season and use the next 5 months to get into that freeriding shape!?

Gear review: Salomon Q105

Schermafbeelding 2014-03-03 om 21.11.23

If you can only buy one ski, this should be it. The new Q-line of ski’s from Salomon brings one of their successes of the Rocker line to the masses. Based on the Rocker2 115 of season 2012 / 2013 the Q-line has a Rockered tip and a early rise tail. If you are looking for a powder ski with an all mountain character, then this is the one you will find.

Persistent Slab Avalanches

In the Western & Swiss Alps there was a lot of talk about a persistent weak layer in the snowpack. Increasing the risk (since snow has finally arrived in large quantities) for large Slab Avalanches. But how to understand this problem a little bit better and how to avoid this risk during your own backcountry skiing. The Utah Avalanche Center has made a really interesting video explaining this phenomenon and how to reduce your risk in encountering it.

The royal destination Baqueira Beret

Baqueira 6

The best food , authentic towns and a strong regional identity. The Val D’Aran is one of those bucket list destinations for powder enthusiasts. Located on the south side of the Pyrenees and surrounded by some high mountains, this place receives a lot of snow when storms come in from the south west. Travelling here from the end of December - March will guarantee you finding a white snow covered valley.
We visited the royal destination of Baqueira for our stay. And this is definably one of those places to see and experience.Continue reading...

Safety Tips for Driving in Snow

image

Depending on the way you approach it, driving in the rather unreliable snow of the Alps can either be a pure joy or an unmitigated nightmare. In any and all instances though it’s inevitably a more dangerous pursuit than hitting the average tarmac motorway, so it’s important to have your wits about you. Continue reading...

Grandvalira Andorra

IMG_0287

This winter we will explore the skiing and snowboarding resorts in the Pyrenees. As the little brother of the Alps, the Pyrenees aren´t that well known as a skiing destination in Europe as their big brother. That is why we will give some extra attention to the resorts that are to be found in the Pyrenees, that hide some gems for wintersportactivities.

To kick off our exploration through the Pyrenees we went to Pas de la Casa in Andorra, from which we ventured into the skiresort Grandvalira.

Live to ride powder another day: snowsafety

You’re waking up in your favorite mountain resort to see a cloudy sky from outside your window. Sleep still in your eyes, you're trying to make out the conditions for today. And guess what? The mountain is getting pounded with fresh pow this morning. While for some people this might be reason to explore the village, for you it is a clear sign to rush to the lifts and get first chair and set some first tracks. Perfect conditions for freeriding! But while getting out on the slopes doesn’t involve a lot of risk, going out of the patrolled area to score fresh tracks can be very dangerous and lead to deadly accidents. While going out on the slopes is just as risky as playing a match of football, freeriding can be just as dangerous as skydiving. You can trigger an avalanche, fall in a crevasse or get lost and get undercooled. So how can you minimize the risk out of bounds and what are the safety measures you should be taking?

Fresh Powder visited Zermatt and what a fairytale village this resort is! When talking about a winter wonderland resort then Zermatt fits the picture.
